The activity was an educational tour focused on our school’s sustainable development project. We visited the wastewater treatment plant behind the hostel, where water from restrooms is treated with specific chemicals. We also participated in a cleanliness drive with the sweepers, visited the junk storage yard, and saw the school’s farm that uses the treated water for irrigation, alongside ruminant animals, creating a closed-loop system.
My primary role was that of an engaged and curious learner. I actively participated by joining the cleanliness drive to help pick up litter around the school. I asked questions to understand the technical process, from waste treatment to its reuse in agriculture. My curiosity drove me to stay until the very end to gain a complete understanding of the entire sustainable cycle.
I learned the practical steps of treating wastewater and how it can be recycled for agricultural use, creating an eco-friendly loop. I saw firsthand the importance of waste segregation and management by visiting the junk yard. The experience gave me a deep appreciation for the effort behind cleanliness and how a community can implement sustainable practices to reduce its environmental footprint.
This activity contributes to nation building by fostering environmentally conscious citizens. Understanding and implementing such sustainable practices conserves vital water resources and reduces pollution. It promotes a sense of civic duty and hygiene. On a larger scale, if adopted widely, these methods can lead to better public health, food security through organic farming, and progress towards the nation’s environmental and sustainability goals.
I will apply this by being more mindful of my water usage and waste generation. I will practice strict waste segregation at source and reduce littering. I can also advocate for and explain the benefits of similar water recycling and composting projects in my family, friends circle, etc. The experience has inspired me to support sustainable local farming and make more environmentally responsible choices every day.
