What was the activity about?
The activity was a Mock Parliament simulation organized in our school,
modelled after the Lok Sabha. Students were divided into different political
parties, including the BJP, Congress, and its alliance parties. The session was
presided over by chairs from VIT University, with a student and teacher
organizing committee managing the event. We followed formal parliamentary
procedures, including setting agendas, debating in moderated caucuses, posing
questions to other delegates, and collaborating within our parties to build
consensus and defend our policies. The primary goal was to provide a hands-on,
realistic experience of how India’s democratic legislature functions.
What was your role in this activity?
I had the distinct honour of being assigned the role of Rahul Gandhi, a key
leader of the Indian National Congress. As a delegate, I was actively involved in
debates, posed challenging questions to the BJP, and collaborated with my
alliance partners to build a strong counter-narrative. A significant contribution
was my success in setting two agendas for the moderated caucus, which steered
the committee’s discussion towards critical issues. My efforts were recognized
by the chairs, and I was humbled to receive the Best Delegate award at the
conclusion of the session.
What did you learn from this activity?
I gained practical insight into parliamentary procedure, debate, and coalitionbuilding. My confidence in public speaking and formulating strategic questions
grew significantly. The experience underscored the power of teamwork and
collaborative strategy. Furthermore, the formal structure provided a comfortable
framework that made social interaction and bonding with peers and chairs
remarkably effortless, turning a challenge into a natural and enjoyable part of
the process.
How does this activity contribute to nation-building?
This activity builds a foundation for responsible citizenship by demystifying
democratic governance. It teaches youth to engage in respectful debate,
appreciate diverse perspectives, and understand consensus-building. By
fostering these essential democratic values and skills in students, it cultivates a
generation of informed, engaged, and future leaders who are prepared to
actively and constructively participate in the nation’s progress and uphold the
principles of a vibrant democracy.
How will you apply this learning in your daily life?
I will directly apply my enhanced public speaking skills in college presentations and
group discussions. The lessons in teamwork and building consensus will make me a
more effective collaborator in academic projects. Personally, the confidence gained
will help me socialize more easily. I am also now motivated to be a more active and
well-informed citizen, following political discourse with a critical and understanding
mind.
